Sjang is involved in several research projects that explore the dynamics within and between academic disciplines in the humanities and sciences.

He is currently completing on a monograph (titled Libaries and Laboratories) that explores the connections between the disciplines of history and physics in nineteenth-century Germany. In a new research project starting in the Fall of 2025, Sjang will explore the history of interdisciplinary collaborations between humanities scholars and natural scientists in the historical study of the climate.

In addition to these individual projects, Sjang has been working together with Marie-Gabrielle Verbergt (Ghent) on the history of peer review and other forms of evaluation in the humanities and sciences. See this recent Call for Papers for a 2026 workshop in Leuven, co-organized with Joris Vandendriessche and Els Minne.
