I currently research the subpolar gyre and its variability mechanisms. The subpolar gyre is one of the tipping elements in the ocean and has strong links to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). I aim to improve our understanding of the interaction between the two to get a better understanding of the risk of tipping of both, and how those would influence each other.
I have a background in atmospheric dynamics, studying North Atlantic weather regimes which describe the low-frequency dynamics of the atmospheric circulation. In collaboration with others I am involved in several studies using regimes to improve our understanding of the atmospheric dynamics, the effect of climate change on it, and what impacts those changes would have.
