Profile

I am currently undertaking a long-term EMBO fellowship in the lab of Prof Ronald Pierik, investigating how saline soils affect plant competition. Although we have a fairly good understanding of how individual environmental signals are detected by plants, we know very little about how plants integrate multiple stimuli into a coherent developmental response. Conditions in the field are rarely homogeneous and so understanding how these processes affect one and other will be key to achieving our ultimate goal of global food security.

At Utrecht University I have demonstrated that soil salinity puts a strong block on shade-avoidance in plants and I am now building a picture of how this occurs on a molecular basis. The mechanism appears to incorporate aspects of the abscisic acid, brassinosteroid and the light signalling pathways, and has led to the discovery of several novel links between these pathways.

Previous to joining the Pierik group, I worked in the lab of Dr Kerry Franklin at Bristol (UK). There I researched how ultraviolet light affects plant competition and temperature-mediated development.
