Geochemistry

I'm a PhD candidate in geochemistry at Utrecht University, specializing in rapid sand filters used in drinking water production. This project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the geochemistry group of Utrecht University and the microbiology group of Radboud University, funded by NWO in collaboration with Vitens and Dunea (Grant 17841).

The aim of the project is to gain a better understanding of the removal of iron, manganese and ammonium in rapid sand filters. My research focuses on the mechanisms behind iron, manganese and ammonium removal primarely in operating sand filters used for drinking water production. I explore how the filter age, backwash procedures and interactions between the different removal mechanisms impact the overall removal efficiency.

Ultimately, our goal is to construct a comprehensive model that the industry can use to optimize their operational processes and enhance the effficiancy of drinking water production.
