Dr. S.H. (Sönke) Matthewes

Sönke Hendrik Matthewes is an Assistant Professor of Applied Economics at Utrecht University’s School of Economics. He is also a Research Associate at the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics and Political Science, a Research Affiliate at the IZA Institute of Labor Economics, a Fellow of the College for Interdisciplinary Education Research (CIDER), and a member of the Verein für Socialpolitik’s standing field committee for economics of education.

His research applies (quasi-experimental) econometric methods to questions in Economics of Education and Labor Economics. More specifically, he studies how features of school systems, such as ability tracking and vocational curricula, shape students’ educational achievement, labor market outcomes — and inequality therein.
