Stan Geertman is Full Professor of Planning Support Science at Utrecht University. He has published widely in both national and international journals and has published a range of (editorial) books. He is member of editorial boards of several international peer-reviewed journals, inter alia Computers, Environment and Urban Systems (CEUS). He has been member of several international conference organizations (EGIS; JECC; AGILE; DDSS) and was from 2011 - 2021 Chair of the international Board of Directors of CUPUM (Computational Urban Planning and Urban Management).
His current research interests:
In May 2021 Professor Stan Geertman reached the retirement age. Due to the still valid Covid-19 restrictions a festive farewell lecture in the Academiegebouw in Utrecht is not possible at the moment, nor does it look like it will take place in the near future, also considering the long queue of people waiting in front of him. There is no question of a truly permanent farewell; through students, lectures, publications, promotions, and the like, he will for the time being remain closely connected to Utrecht University.
As an alternative, he has therefore decided to link his planned 'farewell lecture' to a 'keynote speech', delivered on 9 June 2021 as the opening contribution to the major international CUPUM conference in Helsinki. CUPUM' stands for 'Computational Urban Planning and Urban Management' and is organised as a conference once every two years in a different part of the world. This makes his 'farewell lecture' less of a 'farewell lecture' in the literal sense of the word.
In this lecture he will discuss his field of 'Planning Support Science' and what it can mean for achieving 'Smarter Planning for Sustainable Urban Futures'.
