Steyn Bergs is Assistant Professor of modern and contemporary art at Utrecht University. As a critic and an art historian, his research operates at the intersections of contemporary art, aesthetics, critical theory, political economy, and media theory. He obtained his PhD from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2022, with a dissertation titled Control Copy: Digital Reproducibility and the Valorization of Contemporary Art. Currently, his research focuses on the aesthetics of infrastructure in contemporary art, as well as on current artistic practices that address uneven development and trouble linear conceptions of time and history. His texts have appeared in numerous magazines, book publications, and journals, including Third Text, Radical Philosophy, Afterimage, Art Journal, and the Journal of African Cinemas, among others. Additionally, he frequently collaborates with artists and other practitioners in the field on various projects, and is a founding member of MAX, a self-organized space for artists, designers, and research practitioners in Brussels.
