Dr. Sarah Anschütz

Assistant Professor
International Development Studies

I am an anthropologist of migration and mobility and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning.

My current research explores different aspects of young people's transnational lives between West Africa and Europe in relation to migration and development - including their complex mobility patterns, affective experiences, and educational and professional trajectories. In a 3-year research project (2024-2027) funded by the Research Council - Flanders (FWO), I will further investigate the fundamental role of digital media in the changing character of young people's transnational engagements and mobilities.

Methodologically, I employ multi-sited, mobile and multimodal ethnographic approaches, with a focus on graphic anthropological, participative and digital methods. I believe that drawing can not only reveal new dimensions of our inner lives, but also captivate audiences in published work, and have incorporated illustrations in my PhD dissertation and other outputs.

Prior to joining Utrecht University, my PhD and postdoctoral research investigated the nature, experiences and implications of migrant youth's transnational mobilities between Ghana and Belgium as part of the ERC-funded MO-TRAYL project
