Dr. Resie Hoeijmakers

Assistant Professor
Sport and Society

Resie Hoeijmakers (1991) studied political science (BSc and MSc) and public administration (MSc) at Radboud University in Nijmegen. In 2016, she completed her Master’s in Political Theory with a thesis that critically assessed the moral value of physical education and the justification of competitive activities within the school curriculum. In 2017, she graduated with honours from the Master’s programme in Public Administration with a thesis that examined and offered recommendations for developing and implementing a good governance framework for Dutch voluntary sport clubs.

Following her second master’s degree, Resie began working as a junior researcher at the Mulier Institute, a Dutch scientific research institute focused on sports and exercise. At the Mulier Institute, she conducted several studies and specialized in voluntary sport clubs and the development of new sports. From March 2020 to November 2024, Resie was a PhD candidate at the Mulier Institute and Utrecht University, where her research focused on constructing a theory of voluntary sport clubs and their management. During this time, she also continued to work on various studies related to Dutch voluntary sport clubs and the development of new sports. In addition to her research, Resie was actively involved in teaching at Utrecht University. She currently works as a researcher at the Mulier Institute and as an assistant professor at Utrecht University.

Resie is also a board member of her local tennis club, TV Rapiditas, where she has held various roles since 2014. In 2024, she became the chair of the club. TV Rapiditas is a voluntary tennis club in Nijmegen with approximately 1,000 members and, in her own words, was the biggest inspiration and motivation for her dissertation. In 2025, she also joined the members' council of the Dutch Tennis and Padel federation, where she contributes to strategic policy discussions at the national level.
