Rick Nouwen is associate professor at the department of Languages, Literature and Communication. Rick's research focus concerns the relation between language and meaning, and how that relation facilitates linguistic communication between humans as well as (more recently) between humans and machines. His work falls within the linguistic disciplines of semantics and pragmatics, but overlaps with philosophy of language, cognitive science and artificial intelligence.

Recent topics of interest to Rick include: rhetorical figures (for instance here), processing of anaphoric relations (for instance here), vagueness and intensification (for instance here) and the meaning of numbers in natural language (for instance here). Rick was editor in chief vor Journal of Semantics from 2013-2021. He is currently the head of the advisory board for this journal.

Rick is the coordinator of the research master Linguistics and he lectures in the Bsc and Msc Artificial Intelligence programmes, as well as in the research master Linguistics. 

Together with Jakub Dotlacil, Rick is the PI of an NWO VC project that uses experiments and computational cognitive modelling to further our understanding of pragmatic processes in discourse (2018-2024). Before that, Ric was PI of an NWO VENI (2005-2008), NWO VIDI (2008-2013) and an ERC Consolidator grant (2013-2018).

Rick Nouwen is the faculty contact person research integrity. 

Rick is ambassador to the focus area Humaine Artificial Intelligence. He is group leader of the research group Language, Logic and Information of the research institute for language sciences, and a member of the computational linguistics group.
