Profile

My research takes a communication and new media approach to urban planning by focusing on the relation between language and space (both physical and virtual) and the role that mobile media play in regaining and reshaping public space in the city.

In order to achieve this goal, I employ computational methods to carry out an analysis of social media data that exploits the linguistic, communicative and relational characteristics of the users. The results shed light on the way city dwellers use media and communication to give rise to public space in its physical, digital and symbolic dimension as well as on the impact of space in fostering social and political change through the emergence of new political subjects and their actions.

In my current projects, I analyze the way the ludic and utopic imagination contribute to participatory urbanism by means of city building games. They can create the basis for imagining alternative spaces in Asian megacities (i.e. Mumbai). I also investigate the role of transnational migrants in linking local urban spaces to global ones. Through their use of social media, their relations and their communication they shape the urban as digital space. Since 2014, I am principal investigator of the European Project "Grage" (887.000 euro) where I analyze the elderly as target group of urban green development. By considering their social media use it becomes possible to support healthy ageing in the communities of the future.

In my past research, I have explored the use of Language Technology and Knowledge Representation in eLearning. I have acquired the EU project "Language Technology for eLearning" (1.5 million euros) and I was its project leader and scientific coordinator from 2005-2008. I was also principal investigator of the EU project "Language Technology for LifeLong Learning" (3.7 million euros) from 2008-2011, as well as of several NWO projects on the creation of Language Resources (2000-2012).

Given the truly interdisciplinary and social character of my research, I am happy to supervise theses and internships of passionate students interested in the topics above and coming from disciplines such as linguistics, media and communication, computer science, artificial intelligence and geoscience. Please feel free to contact me.

Green and Grey in Europe: elderly living in urban areas (Grage)
01.12.2014 to 30.11.2018
General project description

The project intends to carry out an interdisciplinary study on the challenges of ageing and sustainable development in urban areas. These are the themes that will be addressed: green urbanization, food sustainability and elderly urban behavior analysis through Information and Language technology.

Responsible for the workpackage: Information and language technology for green and healthy behaviour in cities

Responsible for the task: Language technology for community detection and behavior in cities

Grouping without Borders: Transnational Creative Knowledge Migrants in Digital Urban Space 20.04.2016 to 01.09.2017
General project description

The project focuses on transnational knowledge migrants (i.e. urban designers at the intersection with technology, culture and sustainability) in the creative industries and their role in shaping the urban as digital space. Creative knowledge migrants constitute an ideal case since they are "transversal enablers" that are able to connect local urban spaces to global ones. An analysis of their use of social media in cities allows for an understanding of the ways physical and digital spaces intersect and the role of these migrants in shaping the local through communicative practice and grouping processes. We carry out a pilot that will allow us to test the methodology based on language technology and social network analysis.

Urban Futures driven by Urban Utopias: Narratives, Play, and Planning 01.01.2016 to 02.01.2017
General project description

The goal of the project is to support the process of education and consensus building in city development among various stakeholders: government, urban planners, citizens and intellectuals. It takes a media, communication, and cultural studies approach to urban change. We also aim to set the basis for imagining alternative spaces in Asian cities through the use of games, literature, films that can be a source of inspiration for urban planners and governments.

You Place it! 01.01.2016 to 01.12.2016
General project description

Development of a geo-game for urban planning. It takes as case study one of the largest low-income areas in Mumbai (India),which is called Dharavi. We turn the intial game from a single player to a multiplayer game and we add a chat-box for the collection of language data. The utlimate goal is to to investigate whether certain
spatial configurations (physical/F2F vs. digital/online) can support consensus finding (in urban planning) better than others through a quantitative analysis of the language data.
