I am a PhD student working on the project ‘Builders on the Beach’. This project is a collaboration between Utrecht University and Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). Together with a multidisciplinary supervisor team, I investigate the bottlenecks of embryonic dune survival on sandy coasts. By combining different research techniques: drone surveys, field experiments, mechanistic modeling, we aim at a better understanding of the establishing dynamics of coastal dunes. This knowledge will directly be put into practice by designing and testing new strategies for ecosystem restoration. Within this research, there is a special focus on spatial self-organization on multiple scales.
