Pepijn Corduwener is an Associate Professor at the section of Political History.

 

Pepijn Corduwener

 

  • is interested in the history of democracy and populism in Western-Europe. He has published several articles on this topic, as well as the monographs The Rise and Fall of the People's Parties. A History of Democracy in Western Europe since 1918 (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2023) and The Problem of Democracy in Postwar Europe (London: Routledge, 2017, paperback 2018).
  • is specialized in Italian politics and history and has published, with Arthur Weststeijn Het Italiaanse Experiment. Een nieuwe geschiedenis van modern Italië(2nd edition, Amsterdam: Prometheus 2020), a Dutch-language study of Italy as Europe's political laboratory.
  • currently holds a VENI-scholarship of the Netherlands Organization of Scientific Research to investigate the crisis of the people's parties in Western-europe. A monograph on this theme called The Rise and Fall of the People's Parties. A History of Democracy since 1918 is forthcoming with Oxford University Press in 2023. Please see 'research' for detailed information.
  • has been working with Eleni Braat on a project that explores the consequences of the Fall of the Berlin Wall for Western Europe, which has resulted in an international workshop and the publication of an edited volume on the topic, released by Routledge in 2019.

Pepijn Corduwener appears regularly as expert commentator on Italy and democracy in Europe on Dutch and Belgian television, radio and in newspapers, including Nieuwsuur, VRT Journaal, Trouw, De Morgen, De Tijd, Het Financieele Dagblad, BNR Nieuwradio and Radio 1.
