Tahir is assistant professor of law at University College Roosevelt (UCR), in Middelburg, The Netherlands. She was also guest lecturer at the Leiden University College (LUC), in The Hague where she taught courses related to law, human rights, gender, families and marriage patterns in transition. As of September 1st, 2020 Tahir will be reseacher at UCERF on the topic of the arranged marriage. She is also Fellow of SIM - Netherlands Institute of Human Rights.
Tahir’s Ph.D (November 2019) analyses the arranged marriage system as practised by Pakistani immigrants in Britain with the aim to understand how transnational marriage-migration is shaping various types of agency. Tahir is also an established writer of fiction and non-fiction in the Dutch language. She has authored books and articles on issues relating to multicultural societies, with a strong focus on migration narratives and the interplay between gender, tradition, modernity and human rights in the migrant family landscape.
Naema Tahir was educated in England, The Netherlands and Pakistan. She earned her Masters of Law degree in 1996 from Leiden University. Tahir practised law for over ten years at national and international organizations. She has taken positions as policy and legal officer at the Dutch government, the United Nations and the Council of Europe, specializing in human rights, protection of migrant workers families and refugee law.
