Maikel Waardenburg, MA is assistant professor Organization Studies at Utrecht University, School of Governance (USG). 

His research focuses on relations between civil society organizations and governments. He is interested in strategic institutional behavior of (voluntary) organizations and competing institutional logics. In his research he uses interpretive methods.

Curriculum vitae

Maikel Waardenburg, MA studied Public Administration and Organizational Science at the Utrecht University School of Governance (USG) between 2001 en 2006. He wrote his master thesis on sport as a medium for HIV awareness. In 2007, Maikel graduated from the master 'Sport Policy & Sport Management' with a thesis on social relations among male adolescents with different ethnic backgrounds in Dutch swimming clubs. During the final year of his studies, he worked as a student assistant of prof. dr. Annelies Knoppers and dr. Jan Boessenkool.

From September 2007 till August 2010 Maikel worked as junior lecturer at the Utrecht University School of Governance on subjects like Organization theory, Management of diversity, and Qualitative research methods. He also participated in a study on the contribution of Richard Krajicek Playgrounds on the social cohesion in deprived areas.

From September 2010, Maikel is working as a PhD candidate at the Utrecht University School of Governance under supervision of prof. dr. Maarten van Bottenburg. His research focuses on how public policies influence internal organizational actions within voluntary sports clubs. He is especially interested in how policy makers use voluntary sports clubs as policy implementers and in the relationships between club volunteers and paid professionals.

Sports dialogues: exploring the role of sports activities and sports facilities for refugee youth at a reception centre

The aim of this project is to explore the meaning of sports activities and sports facilities for refugee youth for 1) their feeling at home at the reception centre, their feelings of belonging within the host country and 2) as a topic for discussing societal issues by actively using dialogues between refugee youth and (Dutch) students about the meaning of sports for social inclusion.

Onderzoek naar Innovaties in publiek-private samenwerking bij multifunctionele sportaccommodaties (MFSA’s). Het onderzoek richt zich op de volgende onderzoeksvragen: Welke innovaties doen zich voor binnen deze samenwerking en welke betekenis hebben die voor de besluitvorming over multifunctionele sportaccommodaties? En wat zijn, op basis van wetenschappelijke kennis, concrete aanknopingspunten voor toekomstige investeringen in sportaccommodaties met lagere faalkosten en een hoger maatschappelijk rendement?
