Dutch for All Children 01.09.2021 to 31.08.2023
General project description

A child with a migration background by definition has a smaller vocabulary in Dutch than a child with Dutch as mother tongue. Therefore, teachers face a number of important questions: “What language development in Dutch can we expect from a child who has been at a language school for six months, for example? Which words and grammar rules should a child know at this stage? And when is their language competence sufficient to enter a regular school?”.
Research into language acquisition is needed to ensure that these children quickly feel at home and have a successful school career. The vocabulary of newcomers is not determined by their age, but by how long they have been working with the Dutch language. To measure the knowledge and progress of children with a migration background, new observation tools and measurement criteria are needed. These criteria form the basis for the development of up-to-date and effective teaching materials within education. With the research project 'Dutch for all children' we want to examine the language development of newcomer children and map out the factors that influence this process.
