Maartje Poelman is assistant professor at the department of Human Geography and the Global Geo Health Data Center. She is also involved in the Future Food Research hub

Before she started at Utrecht University, she held a position at the department of Health Sciences at the VU-University Amsterdam. As part of her PhD, she worked on the research project ‘Portion Control: Dealing with the Supersized Food Environment’. In 2013, she visited the National Institute for Health Innovation, New Zealand, to work on an international study together with the Global Food Monitoring Group. As postdoc, she conducted a RCT to evaluate the effectiveness of food taxes on purchase behaviour in the Virtual Supermarket. 

Maartje obtains a Bachelor in Nutrition and Dietetics and a Master in Health Sciences with a specialization in Prevention and Public Health. She joined the executive committee of the International Society of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity (ISBNPA) in 2018 and is involved in the special interest group ‘Policy and Environments’ and the network of early career researchers and students.

Principal-investigator NWO Veni grant "Geographies of Food Consumption".  Combining insights from both health- and geosciences to untangle the complex relationship between the food environment, food consumption and health.  

Co-investigator of the ZonMW reserach project 'Food in Motion'. Evaluating whether offering more healthy and tasty snacks can affect food choices, so that the healthy choice becomes easier. This project is a collaboration between UU self-regulation lab, the municipality of Utrecht and the department of Human Geography. 

Co-invesitgator and WP leader in the JPI-policy evaluation network - Delayed. Expected starting date: December 2018. 

Co-supervisor in the PhD research project that focuses on the evaluation of real-life supermarket interventions aimed to stimulate healthy food purchases. (external project: VU University Amsterdam). 

Co-investigator of the research SMARTSIZE@work: A combination of a weight management program and nudging in the worksite cafetaria.
