Maartje Poelman is assistant professor at the Healthy Urban Living research program of the department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning (www.uu.nl/hul). She is also involved in the Future Food Research focus area (www.uu.nl/en/research/future-food-utrecht). She combines insights from both health- and geosciences to untangle the complex relationship between the food environment, food consumption and health. Recently, she was awarded with a personal NWO VENI grant for her proposal "Geographies of Food Consumption". During this project, she will explore how busy and dynamic lifestyles of urban dwellers, in combination with the food-abundant environment we live in nowadays, affect dietary behaviour. With innovative and technology-driven methodologies, observations in naturalistic settings will be conducted (www.uu.nl/nieuws/ongezonde-verleiding-bij-jou-in-de-buurt).

Before she started at Utrecht University, she held a position at the VU-University and the EMGO+ Institute for Health and Care Research at the department of Health Sciences in Amsterdam. As part of her PhD, she worked on the research project ‘Portion Control: Dealing with the Supersized Food Environment’. In 2013, Maartje obtained the EMGO+ travel grant to visit the National Institute for Health Innovation, New Zealand, to work on an international study together with the Global Food Monitoring Group. As postdoc, she conducted a RCT to evaluate the effectiveness of food taxes on purchase behaviour in the Virtual Supermarket as part of the European consortium Determinants of Diet and Physical Activity (DEDIPAC). Also, she is involved in research projects aimed at the implementation and evaluation of healthy food environment interventions (work in progress).

Over the past years Maartje lectured in several courses (Introduction in Health Science, Health Psychology, Health and Policy, Food for Thought, Urban Geography, Health Geography). Moreover she supervised students undertaking their B.Sc. and M.Sc. research thesis and was involved in tutoring of 1st and 2nd year students; coaching a teaching academic and professional skills.

Maartje obtains a Bachelor in Nutrition and Dietetics and a Master in Health Sciences with a specialization in Prevention and Public Health. She is member of the International Society of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity (ISBNPA),  involved in the special interest group ‘Policy and Environments’ and the network of early career researchers and students.
