Martijn Smit is a researcher on the geography and economics of remote working, regional development, labour markets, agglomeration, processes of innovation and innovation diffusion, peripheries, and EU regional policy.

Other topics he is interested in include urban development, (big) data and railway infrastructure. In addition, he has worked on a range of other topics, such as processes of globalization in the diffusion of Western classical music around the world, and the perception of ‘the countryside’ among Italians. Finally, he holds an MA in Classics, with special interest in foreign relations in the Roman world, and Neolatin in the 18th century.

Martijn regularly appears in the media; in 2020, he contributed on the international train connection from the Netherlands to Berlin (Reporter Radio), and on implications of the corona crisis for Dutch regions (AD/Stentor).
