Marc Bierkens (1965) holds the chair in Earth Surface Hydrology at the Department of Physical Geography at Utrecht University and was acting chairman of the department from March 2009 until may 2015. He received his MSc in Hydrology from Wageningen University (1990), a PhD in Physical Geography from Utrecht University (1994) and became professor of Hydrology at Utrecht University in 2002. He is also partly employed by TNO/Deltares In between 1994 and 2002 he worked as a senior scientist and team leader at Alterra Research Institute in Wageningen. Marc Bierkens’ ?elds of expertise are groundwater hydrology, stochastic hydrology, hydrological regionalisation, upscaling theory and geostatistics. Recently initiated work comprises integrated modelling of soil-water-vegetation dynamics, data-assimilation methods for operational water management and global scale hydrological modelling in relation to climate change and water availability. Marc Bierkens is fellow of the American Geophysical Union. He is also a member of the European Geosciences Union and the International Association of Hydrological Sciences and is associate editor for Water Resources Research. He was chairman of the Boussinesq Center, the network of university hydrology groups in theNetherlands(2007-2011) and is currently chairman of the Netherlands Hydrology Society, which represents over 600 Dutch hydrology professionals. He co-organised the IAHS ModelCARE conference in 2005 in The Netherlands. He was supervisor on 19 completed PhD theses and has been a committee member on > 60. Marc Bierkens (co-) authored about 200publications, > 130 of which appeared in international peer-reviewed journals. He is principal author of the book “Upscaling and Downscaling Methods for Environmental Research” (2002), co-author of the book “Sampling for Natural Resource Monitoring” (2006) and editor of the book “Climate and the Hydrological Cycle” (2008).

Prediction of piping risk at delta scale is difficult because it demands detailed knowledge on composition of the natural substrate below the dike, e.g. grain size distribution, sorting and layering and on the way seepage water flows through this; horizontally, diagonally, via preferential paths. This project aims to identify locations of increased piping-risk below river dikes of the Dutch delta. The methods involve improved mapping of substrate below dikes throughout the delta, measurement of hydraulic characteristics of the subsurface at field test locations, and full-3D hi-res numerical modeling of the piping process. This will result in faster and more cost-efficient identification of piping-risk locations and better-informed calculation of dike stability, needed to maintain safety standards along 100-kms of dike.

General project description 

Rapid coastal groundwater modelling and scenarios for strategic policy development


The main goal of the Water Nexus programme is to create saline water alternatives for freshwater use in agriculture and industry. This specific PhD research -as part of the whole programme- is focused on developing tools for quick construction of fresh-salt groundwater flow and coupled salt transport models and scenario development of climate and anthropogenic changes (sea-level rise, increased water demand etc.) and their impact on coastal fresh groundwater reserves, both in terms of quantity and quality. Development of these tools will provide a firm ground in identifying vulnerabilities and opportunities for water distribution control, management decisions and future policy planning. Furthermore, it will give an opportunity for stakeholders, e.g. from within WN, to use the tools for fresh-salt groundwater model development in new areas around the world.

Fresh groundwater reserves in 40 major deltas under global change

General project description 

The growing population and booming economy in deltas, often occurring in mega-cities, will increasingly tax existing groundwater reserves, notably through excessive groundwater abstraction and urbanisation that results in the sealing of aquifers to groundwater recharge. As deltas are already under threat by climate change and sea-level rise, the confounding effects of these stressors will most likely lead to enhanced depletion and salinisation of fresh groundwater resources. At the same time, groundwater reserves are key to solving the problem of future water scarcity in deltas under a growing climate- and socio-economic change. Until our technologies are advanced enough to increase supply (using water of lesser quality) or reduce demand, fresh groundwater will be of vital importance to economic (agricultural and industrial) development in many countries. Here will we apply a combination of state-of-the-art models of surface water hydrology and variable-density groundwater flow to estimate the current fresh groundwater reserves and distributions in 40 major deltas around the world as well as their projected trends under climate- and socio-economic change. This novel approach includes the detailed palaeo-hydrogeological modelling of four deltas in combination with assessing the main factors explaining the fresh-salt groundwater distribution in deltas and mapping these factors worldwide. Using this setup, we will greatly increase understanding of salinisation processes in deltas and contribute to better coastal groundwater management. We will also analyse the effectiveness of possible mitigating measures (such as reducing groundwater abstraction, implementing aquifer storage and recovery) to safeguard or even increase fresh groundwater reserves in the near future.

Hydrogeological impacts of mega-suppletion along the Dutch Coast: The Zandmotor 01.06.2013 to 31.05.2017
General project description

The pilot Sand Motor creates a dynamic environment along the coastline of the Netherlands, in which (continuous) changes in the distribution of fresh and salt groundwater take place. Although the magnitude of the spatial and temporal changes in the density of the coastal groundwater is not known beforehand, it creates an ideal circumstance for the advancement of our knowledge on seawater intrusion processes.


The research subjects of the PhD are chosen in accordance with the below mentioned objectives: 1. develop tools to understand and predict the effects of the Sand Motor and similar mega nourishment’s on fresh water availability in the dune-beach system, and 2. make a significant contribution to the scientific knowledge on seawater intrusion processes and the modeling of variable-density processes in real situations


Based on these objectives, the expected changes in the distribution of fresh and salt groundwater and the interdisciplinary character of the Sand Motor project five research subjects are defined: a. development of the fresh-salt water mixing zone/interface, b. effect of tides and storm surges on the fresh-salt water mixing zone/interface, c. uncertainty analysis, d. possibility to increase coastal fresh groundwater reserves, and e. interdisciplinary (hydrology, geochemistry, ecology, morphology)
