Marianna Capasso is a postdoctoral researcher in Ethics & Philosophy of Technology at the Department of Media and Culture Studies, and the lead of the Cross-Cultural AI Ethics Cluster of the AI Inclusive Lab. For her work Marianna has been named Rising Star in AI Ethics for 2025 - promising new and upcoming diverse talent in this critical space.

Her research expertise lies at the intersection of ethics of technology and political philosophy, with a special focus on philosophical issues of human freedom and responsibility with AI, Design for Values, Bias and Discrimination in AI, and AI and the Future of Work. Marianna is currently working on the EU-funded project FINDHR, in which she explores the socio-ethical implications of intersectional discrimination in algorithmic hiring, and the responsible governance of synthetic data generation and use.

Prior to joining Utrecht, Marianna was a postdoctoral researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam and at Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa. At Sant'Anna, she obtained her PhD cum laude in Human Rights and Global Politics with a dissertation on freedom and control in AI. During her PhD, she spent a period as a visiting researcher at the section Ethics/Philosophy of Technology of TU Delft. Marianna holds a MA in Philosophy from the University of Pisa and a Honours Diploma in Philosophy from the Scuola Normale Superiore.
