I am an Assistant Professor in the Copernicus Institute for Sustainable Development. My position involves 50% educational and 50% research activities.

With my current research I aim to predict how different terrestrial ecosystems actively respond to global environmental change. I focus mostly on plant ecosystems in drylands, savannas and Mediterranean forests. I am interested in studying the complex ecosystem dynamics emerging from plant-plant and plant-environment interactions.

Physics was my first scientific playground, but I have always been interested in plants, and in environmental and climate issues in general. Therefore, I have an attitude in looking at plant ecosystems with the mechanistic, quantitative eye of the physicist. This leads me to build simplified mechanistic models that help understanding how complex dynamics affect the ecosystems. I also like to extract the signal out of noisy data, which lead me to study large datasets of plants occurrence with network techniques. I developed a new network tool to study plant species richness at the local scale along environmental gradients, useful for analysing large ecological datasets such as e.g. National Forest Inventories.

Besides the curiosity about the plants and (eco)systems I study, in my work I'm also driven by the will of connecting different type of knowledge and people within different fields, from the most quantitative approaches of complex system science to plant field ecology, via climate science and (eco)hydrology, touching also the far realm of economics. I personally experienced that connecting people with different backgrounds is challenging, but it leads most often to very innovative and groundbreaking discoveries.

My current main research activities

  • Fire and old-filed succession in Mediterranean forests. Linking data and simple models and studying the feedbacks between species composition and fires. The study cases are from the CASCADE project, in Eastern Spain and Portugal (with Ana Vasques, University of Aveiro).
  • Species distribution and network analysis: revealing woody plant co-occurrence and  species richness along environmental gradients with a novel network tool  (RESINEE)
  • Plant-plant interactions in dryland: a focus on facilitation with simple mechanistic models (CASCADE)With Mart Verwijmeren and Rubén Díaz Sierra (UNED Madrid, Spain)

Currently I am coordinating the course of Physics for Energy and Transport, for the level I of Bachelors in Science and Innovation Management (NW&I) and Global Sustainability Science (GSS).

I also supervise Bachelor theses, and Master theses and resource projects for the Master in Sustainable Development.
