René Glas is an assistant professor of New Media and Digital Culture, specializing in digital games and game culture, within the Department of Media and Culture Studies. With a background in film and new media studies, most of his research and teaching is within the field of game studies. He has published on games and media literacy, games and  paratextuality, gaming history, participatory culture, and play as method. Selected publications are his books Battlefields of Negotiation: Control, Agency, and Ownership in World of Warcraft (Amsterdam University Press, 2012) and The Playful Citizen: Civic Engagement in a Mediatized Culture (co-ed., Amsterdam University Press, 2019). He is currently working on book dealing with the paratexts of video game production.
