Muriel Hagenaars is associate professor with ius promovendi at the Clinical Psychology department of Utrecht University. Her main aim is to clarify mechanisms of change in the development of psychopathology and in psychological treatment. Her two main research areas are focused on freezing and mental imagery, supervising PhD students on both topics. With external funding (e.g., NWO-Veni, KNAW/NIAS fellowship, ODISSEI) she set up a research line spanning (neuroscience) freezing parameters, prevalence estimation, mechanism research, and clinical translation. In her research line on mental imagery (also facilitated by external funding, e.g., FWO open competition) Hagenaars has focused on its role in emotional memory and its use in psychological treatment. She is co-director of the International Consortium for Imagery Rescripting, with the aim to boost international collaboration. Next to her work at the UU, Muriel Hagenaars is consulting the police in difficult cases as a member of the LEBZ. She also works as research coordinator at Altrecht Center for Personality Disorders.
