My research covers the history of the life sciences in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In recent years it has focused on the history of genetics and its applicatiions, especially on the history of livestock breeding. I am particularly interested  in the circulation of knowledge between science and practice - between scientific experts (such as geneticists, agricultural engineers, veterinarians etc.) en practical breeders (farmers and their breeding organisations). The interactions between these actors can be described in terms of different 'breeding cultures'.  The results show how innovation works in practice and can be relevant for livestock breeding policy making.
