Loes van Bree started the NESSC PhD project on 'East African climate changes encompassing late Pleistocene glacial cycles using organic geochemical proxy records’ in May 2014. Long climate records from (sub-)tropical continental regions provide an important counterpoint to the polar ice-core records from Antarctica and Greenland. We will generate high-resolution and well-dated organic proxy records of continental climate from East Africa near the equator over the past ca.250,000 years, thus encompassing two complete glacial-interglacial cycles. We will do this in concurrence with the international deepCHALLA consortium, through analysis of core material to be obtained through an ICDP drilling mission in Lake Challa (Kenya/Tanzania) in 2016. Until that time, Loes will work on modern data sets from Lake Challa - vegetation, water column and sediment traps - to understand the relationships between what you find in the sediment core and how we can interpret those biomarkers in the modern system and the quarter million years long climate archive.
