The Dutch Global Age: Worldly Images And Images Of The World In Netherlandish Art
General project description

The art of the Dutch ‘Golden’ Age has many non-Western elements, from the Islamic scarf of Vermeer’s Girl with Pearl Earring to Rembrandt’s Chinese porcelain. The project ‘The Dutch Global Age’ examines how Netherlandish art has contributed to a global worldview and demonstrates the contemporary relevance of Netherlandish Old Masters in a globalising world.

Individual project description

Laia’s research within The Dutch Global Age project investigates the contemporary curation and display of seventeenth-century Netherlandish art in museums located beyond the Europe/US axis, focusing on exhibition strategies, institutional dynamics, and public and critical reception. She explores how these works, often entwined with colonial histories, are interpreted to engage multicultural publics. Using a combination of primary source analysis, interviews to curators, and quantitative research, she examines the narratives and challenges affecting the global dissemination of Netherlandish art. Her sub-project aims to contribute to discussions on cultural dialogue, curatorial practices, and the evolving role of museums in shaping perceptions of European art in postcolonial contexts.
