Profile

Spatial dynamic ecosystem modeling is a field of major importance for integrating and scaling up current ecosystem knowledge and identifying future research directions.  My overall research focus is to use spatial dynamic modeling for eco-hydrological and biogeochemical research.  By modeling these ecosystem processes using our current experimental and theoretical knowledge and applying this to different scales (e.g. plant – stand – watershed – continent – global), we can test our current knowledge of the system, integrate this knowledge over space and time, and study the emergent properties of the system.  We can also use these models to predict into the future or create decision support systems that can be useful for third parties.

My research is on linking hydrological processes to biogeochemical transformations of carbon and nitrogen. Interdisciplinary methods are required for this kind of complex problems in order to link small-scale process-level understanding to regional patterns and outcomes.  Recently, I joined a research team to assess carbon-nitrogen-climate interactions, using a 'dynamic global vegetation model (DGVM)' with integrated C-N cycles and a Global Climate Model (EC-Earth), in anticipation of future IPCC assessment reports (co-promotor).
