Jan-Willem van der Roest (1985) is an assistant professor at the Utrecht University School of Governance (USG). His research interest lies in the public value of sports, specifically the impact of societal developments on sports organisations and the impact of (elite) sports on society. Core research themes include:

• societal impact of elite sports
• policy and organisation of (elite) sports in the Netherlands
• consumerism and individualisation in sports clubs
• social cohesion and democracy in and through sports clubs
