Jo is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University, specializing in the intersection of video games, artificial intelligence (AI), analytics, and data science. He is part of the Interaction/Multimedia group within the Information and Computing Sciences department. His research focuses on applying AI and data science techniques to video games, often collaborating directly with the gaming industry to implement and evaluate innovations. As an overall research goal, he aims to augment player experience with AI- and data-driven approaches, and stresses the central role of the player in development, balancing, and analytics of video games.

He holds a Doctor of Engineering degree (Computer Science) from the University of Bremen that builds on his previous Master of Science degree in Cognitive Science (Osnabrück University). In addition to his research, Jo currently runs the largest platform for Guild Wars 2 endgame analytics, and several other published game AI/data tools.
