Dr. João P. Trabucho Alexandre is a Dutch-Portuguese sedimentary geologist. He is tenured assistant professor in sedimentology at Utrecht University (Department of Earth Sciences). In 2011, he was awarded his doctorate cum laude at Utrecht University. Before joining the faculty at Utrecht in 2014, João worked as a postdoctoral research associate and lecturer at Durham University, UK.

João is interested in processes and environments of deposition of mud in deep time; oceanic anoxic events and black shales; Mesozoic epeiric environments of deposition; and the Mesozoic of the Pacific (Panthalassa). In recent projects, the attention of his team has focused on the Triassic–Jurassic of Western North American exotic terranes, the Lower Jurassic of Yorkshire, England, and the uppermost Cretaceous of the Netherlands and Belgium.

João is treasurer and member of the Council of Management of the International Association of Sedimentologists, associate editor of the Journal of Sedimentary Research, Ambassador in the Netherlands of the Society for Sedimentary Geology, SEPM, and alumnus of the Utrecht Young Academy.

João is an innovative teacher with 10+ years of experience teaching courses on undergraduate and graduate levels. He has successfully completed the programmes Educational Leadership and Honors Teaching of Utrecht University’s Centre for Academic Teaching. João was awarded the Durham University Learning and Teaching Award in 2013. João is Associate Fellow of Advance HE (previously Higher Education Academy, UK) and a member of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (USA).

João likes to read, write, and talk about teaching and learning in higher education and the history of earth sciences. He loves to be out in the field examining rocks, particularly with his students.
