Josie Läuferts

PhD Candidate
Economic and Social History

Josie is a PhD candidate researching “The transnational circulation of knowledge and practice in social security and its impact on social security policy in the Netherlands, 1945-2017”, funded by the GAK institute. Her research explores the role of international organisations and epistemic communities in shaping knowledge in the area of social security. Adopting a transnational approach, the project focusses on how different actors (IOs, unions, activist groups) in the social security debate impacted the formation and development of Dutch social security policy from 1945-2017. Emphasis is placed on the often “hidden” world of policy making by examining how ideas and knowledge circulate between actors beyond democratic (electable) political spheres. The research focusses on a group which has often fallen outside the scope of welfare and security, namely migrants. In doing so, her research uncovers how, and to what extent, migrants have been included in the debates regarding the development and practice of social security.
