Jelle Lammerts van Bueren is employed as a PhD researcher at Utrecht University's political history section within his own research project “Contesting Restrained Democracy.” As such, he is currently also active as a chercheur invité at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po). For his PhD, he researches the integration of referendum ideas and practices into the postwar Western European democratic model, with a special interest for the French, Italian, and British cases. How come Western European states have developed such an interest in direct democratic practices and ideas since the 1970s? The project is funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) through the PhD in the Humanities competition and is is supervised by dr. P. Corduwener and prof. dr. I. de Haan.
Before starting as a researcher, he worked as a lecturer in Utrecht's History program and completed the Research Master's program in history at this university. He also studied at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.
