Profile

Humans use multiple senses to navigate the social world. Among these, our sense of smell is arguably the most underestimated one. One intriguing function of the sense of smell is its social communicative function. Research has shown that human odors can convey information about a range of states (e.g., emotions, sickness) and traits (e.g., individuality, gender). Yet, what underlies the communicability of these states and traits via smell? This question continues to fascinate me.

Jasper de Groot (1989) currently works in the Smeets lab as a postdoctoral researcher at the department of Social, Health, & Organizational Psychology at Utrecht University, Utrecht, the Netherlands. Jasper studied Psychology and completed his Social & Health Psychology Research Master’s  at Utrecht University (cum laude). He went on to obtain a Research Talent Grant from NWO to conduct his 3-year PhD on “emotional chemosignaling”, the human capacity to communicate emotions from one individual to another via body odor. A few months before obtaining his PhD (2015, cum laude), he became a postdoc. Very recently, he was one of seven scientists to win a prestigious Niels Stensen scholarship, enabling him to conduct research with olfaction expert professor Jay Gottfried, PhD, MD, at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA (starting October 2017). His publications appeared in renowned scientific journals such as (Perspectives on) Psychological Science and Trends in Cognitive Sciences. He also reaches out to the general public at large and patient populations in particular, by participating in societal discussions (Studium Generale) and giving lectures for individuals having a smell disorder.
