Charles van Marrewijk is Professor of Economics at Utrecht University School of Economics (USE, since 2008) and Head of Department (since 2022), specializing in International Trade, International Macroeconomics, Regional Science, Economic Growth, Geographical Economics, Economic Development, and Agglomeration.

Charles studied at Erasmus University Rotterdam (The Netherlands, 1981-85) and Purdue University (USA, 1985-1988). He previously worked at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands, 1987-1990), Erasmus University Rotterdam (The Netherlands, 1990-2008), and Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University (China, 2014-2017).

Charles was Head of Research at the International Institute for Housing and Urban Development (IHS, 2007-8), Tjalling Charles Koopmans Institute (TKI, 2009-13), International Business School Suzhou (IBSS, 2014-2016), and Utrecht University School of Economics Research Institute (USE-RI, 2018-2022).

Charles has published widely in a range of top journals and wrote more than ten books for Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press. The academic and scientific impact of his work is substantial. At the moment he is (co-)editor for three international academic journals.
