Jelmar Hugen is a university lecturer of medieval literature at the Dutch department of TLC. He teaches courses on both bachelor and research master levels and is also involved with the minor 'Middle Ages' and the Honours College.

Between 2018 and 2022, he was a PhD student researching the multilingual context of Flemish literature between c. 1200-1500, as part of the NSO-project The Multilingual Dynamics of the Literary Culture of Medieval Flanders (ca 1200 - ca 1500) (2018-2022, project leader: prof. Bart Besamusca). His dissertation, entitled Crossroads of Cultures. Multilingual Diversity in Dutch Literature from Late Medieval Flanders was defended on December 7th 2022.
