Jakub Dotlacil is an assistant professor at the department of Languages, Literature and Communication. In his research, he tries to understand how communication is possible. How does it come about that we can communicate very complex thoughts given limits in language-independent cognitive domains like memory and attention? And why is it that sometimes communication does fail or break down? For his research, Jakub uses (i) experimental methods that can unearth very fast, immediate and often unconscious reactions that people experience when reading stories, like measuring eye movements and fixations during reading, and (ii) computational and formal models of language and cognition.

Past and ongoing research projects:

  • Memory access in language: how we store and retrieve linguistic information. The project is supported by an ERC Consolidator grant. More details about the project can be found here and on Jakub's personal website.
  • An integrated semantic and cognitive model of presuppositional dependencies (together with Rick Nouwen). The project was supported by an NWO Vrije Competitie grant. More details can be found here and on Jakub's personal website.

Jakub is involved in teaching in BA and MA AI and linguistic programmes.
