Profile

Jan Casalicchio studied Classical and Italian Philology at the University of Trento and received his PhD in Linguistics at the University of Padova in 2013. He has worked in Romance formal syntax (focusing on verbal Small Clauses, Verb Second, subject clitics in Romance), Northern Italian dialectology, contact linguistics, language variation and change, diachronic syntax. Before moving to the Netherlands, he worked as postdoctoral researcher at the University of Trento (ERC-synergy grant project AThEME - Advancing the European Multilingual Experience www.atheme.eu). In this project he focused on the Northern Italian region Trentino/South Tyrol, where two Romance and three German(ic) regional varieties are spoken besides Italian and German (Rhaeto-romance, Trentino dialects, Tyrolean dialects, Cimbrian and Mòcheno). Furthermore, he contributed to the development of an online platform for collecting data that allows speakers to use their own PCs and to record their answers with the built-in microphone ('Varieties in Contact' - VinKo). After his PhD he also worked as Contract Lecturer at the Universities of Verona and of Bolzano/Bozen, and in 2016 he was visiting scholar at the Centre de Lingüística Teòrica of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and at the Georg-August Universität Göttingen.

At Utrecht University he works as postdoctoral researcher within the ERC-funded project Microcontact (https://microcontact.sites.uu.nl).
