Inge van der Valk works as associate professor in the research group Adolescent Development at the Department of Education and Pedagogics at Utrecht University.
Research focuses on divorce and children
She teaches in the bachelor and master of Pedagogics, as well as in the research master DaSCA. Next, she is chairman of the examination committee of the bachelor Pedagogics. In her research, she examines the association between parental conflicts, divorce, and the adjustment of children and adolescents. For example, she did a longitudinal study on the consequences of a parental divorce for adolescents, she researched differences between children from conflicted versus non-conflicted divorces, and performed a RCT study on the effectiveness of KIDS, a preventive intervention program for children of divorce. She is presently engaged in various research projects regarding children from divorced and separated families. For instance, she's involved in a large multidisciplinary research project from Utrecht University on the belongingness of children after divorce titled 'Where do I belong?'. She was also recently involved in a study commissioned by the WODC (part of the Ministry of Justice and Security), together with family law researchers from the VU and UU, and as lead author of the revision of the guidelines on divorce and juveniles.
In addition to study 'Where do I belong' - the belongingness of young people after divorce, Inge is currently conducting research on behalf of ZonMw and together with researchers from Altra and Sterk Huis into the SCRES-O and SCRES-K, newly developed instruments for screening and evaluation in divorce programs. Next, together with legal researchers, she is conducting a study into the effects of a pilot procedure at a number of courts in the Netherlands.
