Ivo Tiebosch is a biologist who has moved back and forth between education and science. He taught Biology on a secondary school, Physiology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Laboratory Animal Science at the Life sciences Institute of the University of Applied Sciences. Besides these biological topics, he became specialised in examination strategies and valid measurements. As a scientist he performed animal experiments focused on enhancing the outcome after an acute stroke using animal stroke models. Having taught about experimental design and quality of science, he approached animal research differently as was custom and then experienced unique difficulties wanting to do valid research. Ivo advocates good experimental design, with a focus on randomisation and blinding. Since 2019 he is working as an animal welfare officer and competence officer at the animal welfare body Utrecht with a focus on education and training, to ensure that animals used in science and education are used and cared for by competent staff only.
