Haomiao Du is an assistant professor in law and sustainability at the Department of International and European Law (IER), School of Law. Currently she is involved in teaching public international law, international climate law and EU climate law. Haomiao's work mainly surrounds international and comparative climate law (in particular the EU, China, and Vietnam). Her research interest mainly includes legal issues associated with climate mitigation and adaptation, and how law deals with emerging (disruptive) technologies (e.g. negative emission technologies, CO2 removal, solar geoengineering). Currently, she is undertaking two research topics: 1) the integration of legal aspects in integrated assessment frameworks for global climate change and the implications of climate science for law-making and adjudication; and 2) the assessment of the legal frameworks for climate neutrality in different jurisdictions. For the former, currently she is undertaking a project on 'The better integration of legal knowledge and scholars into climate scenario assessments'.

Prior to this position, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Utrecht Centre for Water, Oceans and Sustainability Law (UCWOSL) (2019-2023). She also served as a legal expert in the interdisciplinary research group of Pathways to Sustainability at UU (2019-2021). In this research group, she was broadly involved in many research projects on the theme of climate adaptation in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. 

Prior to working at Utrecht University, Haomiao was a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Governance & Technology for Sustainability, the School of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences (BMS) of the University of Twente. She was involved as a legal expert in an NWO project on the responsible research and development of drone technology. In this project, she mainly dealt with the legal issues associated with risk prevention and precaution, and she applied the theory of experimental regulation to drones.

Haomiao completed her PhD at the Amsterdam Centre for International Law (ACIL) of the University of Amsterdam on the topic of the international legal framework for geoengineering. During her PhD, she did an internship at the department of Legal Affairs of the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) (with 'excellent' in the final evaluation of the internship).

Prior to her PhD programme, she obtained her LLM in Environmental and Resource Protection Law and LLB (Honours) in China. She owns the qualification to practise law in China since 2010.

Haomiao likes learning languages and enjoys working in a multicultural environment. She speaks Chinese, English, German (between B2 and C1 level) and Dutch (between B1 and B2 level).
