Gerritsen houdt zich bezig met de ontwikkeling en het gebruik van geavanceerde microscopiemethoden. Voorbeelden zijn de ontwikkeling van ‘fluorescence lifetime’ microscopie voor de bestudering van moleculaire interacties en (in-vivo) multi-photon excitatie microscopie en spectroscopie. Daarnaast wordt gewerkt aan de ontwikkeling van correlatieve microscopie, de combinatie van elektronenmicroscopie en fluorescentiemicroscopie.

Er wordt nauw samengewerkt met biologische, medische en chemische groepen.
