As an educator, Akarsu's primary aim is to create an inclusive learning environment that renders the tools and concepts of social sciences relevant to students from diverse backgrounds, training for a wide range of careers. At Brandeis University (USA), she taught a graduate seminar on the anthropology of policing, militarization, and surveillance, and an undergraduate seminar on culture and power in the Middle East. At the University of Arizona (USA), she co-taught large, freshman-level courses offered by the School of Anthropology and the School of Geography and Development; instructed her own upper-level undergraduate seminars, including World Ethnography and Ethnographies of the Middle East; and designed courses in online and hybrid formats. In these institutions, she has also advised undergraduate and graduate students.

At Utrecht University, she will co-teach an MA course on Security, Violence and Sovereignty (Period 2) and will supervise graduate students.
