Curriculum vitae

Gijs Jan Brandsma (1983) is assistant professor, specialized in European Union governance.

He studied Political Science at Leiden University, the Netherlands. During his study, he was a research assistant in various research projects, such as European party politics, Dutch party politics, Euroscepticism and access of interest groups to decision-makers.

From 2005 to 2009, he worked as a PhD fellow in an NWO-funded project on accountability and the European Union. Specifically, he pays attention to ‘Comitology committees’ in the European Union. These committees are in charge of the implementation of several hundred European policies. He investigated the role accountability plays, or should play, in this setting.

Since 2009 he has broadened his scope to include European decision-making more generally; first as a postdoctoral research fellow in a research project on Open Government in the European Union, led by NWO Spinoza-laureate prof. dr. D.M. Curtin, since 2012 as assistant professor paying specific attention to informal forms of EU governance.

Besides this, he worked in various contracted research projects on, amongst other issues, the monitoring of the Nitrates Directive in the Netherlands, and whistleblowing.
