Public events that I have co-organized

First Utrecht Degrowth Symposium: Introducing degrowth to the Netherlands (2019)

The concept of degrowth is now widely researched and practiced across Europe, but so far remained largely unexplored in the Netherlands. The first Utrecht Degrowth Symposium was organized to change this and to introduce degrowth thinking to the larger public. An interest in alternative, not growth-addicted pathways to sustainable future turned out to be high, as the event attracted more than 300 people from all over the Netherlands and from diverse sectors of the economy - academia, NGOs, public institutions, businesses. For those who could not come, we present below summaries of the three presentations. If you wish to watch the entire lecture yourself, video recordings can be found at the end of each summary. Watch the presentations and panel discussion here.

Second Utrecht Degrowth Symposium (online): From Circular Economy to Circular Society (2020)

The event had over 1500 registrations from various sectors including academia, NGOs, public sector, private companies. Some of the key discussion topics included the current challenges of the circular economy concept and the need to go beyond market-based circular solutions. This demonstrated the necessity to think of fair and regenerative circular society rather than simply an eco-efficient circular economy. Watch the presentations and panel discussion here.

Third Utrecht Degrowth Symposium: Sowing sustainability in food and agriculture (2023).

Sustainable agri-food systems are essential for societies to be able to thrive within planetary boundaries. The debate on agri-food systems sustainability is heated and multiple visions compete to cast light on the future of food production and consumption in the Netherlands and worldwide. Yet, the debate is also stuck in existing approaches and for many it has become difficult to imagine pathways to just and sustainable agri-food systems. In this context, can degrowth bring something new to the debate? Watch the presentations and panel discussion here.
