Prof. dr. Gemma Blok

Professor
Cultural History

My research focuses mainly on the twentieth century history of psychiatry, addiction and intoxication. I have published on antipsychiatry in the Netherlands between 1965-1985; the history of Dutch addiction treatment; migration and psychiatry around 1900; and heroin use in the late twentieth century Netherlands.

Themes I am currently working on include: the history of psychiatric medication narratives; the role of family and loved ones in the history of mental health care; and the use of experiential expertise in the investigation of psychiatric histories.
