In September 2009 Ferry de Jong obtained his PhD cum laude. The book explores – from a philosophical, mainly hermeneutical point of view – the relations between, on the one hand, the concepts of action, intention and culpability in Dutch substantive criminal law, and on the other hand, the pre-legal concepts of action, intention, and individual responsibility.

His current research interests include criminal legal doctrine, the notions of freedom (of will) and responsibility in criminal law, and the application of legal theory and legal philosophy to different topics central to (substantive and procedural) criminal law.
