Assistant Professor
Comparative Literature
f.w.janssen@uu.nl

I joined the Comparative Literature section at Utrecht University in 2021.

My research is interdisciplinary, international and multilingual and focuses on literature and social, political and economic history in the long nineteenth century. I am particularly interested in gender, marginalised identities and social activism and my published work has examined activist campaigns on issues including harassment, access to birth control and labour exploitation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. My recent monograph, Women's Activism in the Transatlantic Consumers' Leagues, 1885-1920 (Edinburgh University Press, 2024), examined a consumer activist movement.

As well as a literary scholar, I am a qualified archivist and my approach to literary studies is grounded in archival research and strongly informed by archives studies.

I am co-coordinator of the BA Literary Studies / Literatuurwetenschap.
