Profile

Frank Wijnen is a psycholinguist with a special interest in language acquisition and developmental language disorders. The work in his group revolves around the (neuro)cognitive underpinnings of primary language acquisition in very young children. The question he is most interested in is how putatively domain-general cognitive mechanisms may contribute to the emergence of the categories and rules of grammar and phonology. Addressing this question will allow us to obtain a deeper understanding of how language, as a faculty of the human mind, works and builds on other cognitive capacities. One of the mechanisms the Wijnen group scrutinizes is statistical learning, the process by which organisms extract statistical patterns from temporally or spatially ordered arrays of stimuli. Research shows that statistical learning plays a role in the construction of the phonological system as well as grammar. Ongoing experiments focus on the question how learners move from detecting and storing stimulus-bound patterns to generalization and grasping abstract rules. The group also looks at delayed and disordered language acquisition, notably in children with a family risk of dyslexia and children with specific language impairment, hypothesizing that statistical learning is deficient in these populations. This work has recently spawned a new line in which we attempt to predict later dyslexia on the basis of early language acquisition patterns.

Project:
1001 Critical Days
01.12.2017 to 01.12.2020
General project description

The first 1001 days of a child’s life, from conception to the age of two, are of vital importance for the development of our complex brain. The brain structure (e.g. different cell types, connections between brain regions) is formed, which will determine a range of skills and cognitive abilities of the child later in life. This project will focus on language development, as an example of an important skill that is dependent on proper brain development. How do stimuli in the first 1001 days influence language acquisition (and disorders)?

Project:
Cognitive development in the context of emerging bilingualism: Cultural minority children in the Netherlands to 29.11.2017
General project description

This study investigates relationships between language abilities and cognitive control in bilingual minority children in the Netherlands. The aim is to better understand the cognitive effects of bilingualism and to disentangle effects of bilingualism and Developmental Language Disorder.

Prediction of Dyslexia in Infants Using Machine-learning (PODIUM) 01.03.2014 to 30.04.2016
General project description

The current project will use machine learning techniques to explore if data on speech processing in infancy can predict the occurrence of later literacy difficulties in individual children. We perform a proof of principle study on existing vocabulary and speech discrimination data from infants at risk of DD and low-risk controls.
