Catalysts ensure that processes run as efficiently as possible, and by-product formation is minimized. This means that scarce raw materials can be made to last as long as possible. In refineries and petrochemical complexes, catalysts are used to convert crude oil into clean fuels such as sulfur- and nitrogen-free gasoline and diesel, as well as raw materials for chemical processes, such as building materials for plastics. While we look for processes and raw materials that are no longer dependent on fossil fuels, and that can be used in a carbon-neutral way, we must not forget to continue to develop fundamental knowledge about the large-scale processes in the refinery. These processes are so large that even small improvements can have major effects. In addition, we will need comparable processes for the new generations of fuels made without fossil resources. My research focuses on improving these processes and catalysts.
