Project:
Ice skating exergame played by refugees and Dutch children in school classes 01.10.2016 to 31.10.2017
General project description

The purpose of this project is to explore how exergames (digital games combining exercise with game play) and the playful interactions fostered during play can contribute to establish, reinforce or change the nature of social interactions among refugees and Dutch children in school classes. Exergame play enables multiple players to compete or cooperate on a team, thereby providing both a virtual and a real social interaction. Because exergame play allows youth to take their eyes off their peers and direct their attention toward a screen, game play may reduce body self-consciousness during physical activity.

Project:
Exploring the possibilities of intergenerational digital game design 01.09.2015 to 31.08.2016
General project description

This explorative study aims to shed light on intergenerational digital game design patterns. The question is how intergenerational gaming between older and younger individuals (e.g. grandparents and grandchildren) can be designed and used to promote their mental, physical and social wellbeing/bonding. Output: a literature review and a research protocol.

Prof. dr. Eugène Loos is an associate professor at USG (Utrecht University School of Governance) and a professor by special apointment for the chair Old and new media in anageing society, endowed by 'ANBO' (the Dutch organisation for senior citizens), at the Communication Science department (Program Group Persuasive Communication) of the University of Amsterdam .

He is a member of the Research School NIG (Netherlands Institute of Government) and ASCoR (Amsterdam School of Communication Research). He contributes to the USG research programme Managing Social Issues and Sport Matters, and he is active in the focus areas Sport & Society and Game Research.

His research agenda focuses on GENERATIONAL DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT. He investigates which factors are influencing the societal impact of digitization on younger and older generations that organizations and their stakeholders wanting to enhance the social inclusion of senior citizens should take into account. Co-creation of public values (as accessible digital information and inclusion) by stakeholders for example in health care and education, by using digital sport games and health site, is the leading principle for his research agenda.

He investigates the (ir)relevance of age and life stage for: (1) different generations of citizens' digital information search behaviour, (2) their perception of the reliability of information, (3) their identification with images in information sources, (4) the impact of visual and textual signs in digital health information on their cognition and affection, (5) the creation and use of (intergenerational) digital games for their wellbeing.

He is co-chair van de Media Work Group of the COST Action “Ageism” isch/IS1402 (www.notoageism.com), en was lid van COST Actions 269 “User aspects of ICT”, COST 298 “Participation in the Broadband Society” (http://www.cost298.org/) and COST Action IS0906 “Transforming Audiences, Transforming Societies” (http://www.cost-transforming-audiences.eu).
