Old and new media in an ageing society
Endowed by ANBO (largest Dutch organization for senior citizens)
Date of appointment 15.06.2009
Inaugural lecture date 25.06.2010
Profile

How can we ensure that (digital) information about services and products is presented by organisations in such a way that this remains accessible to various older population groups?

This question is the focus of my research agenda, Old and new media in an aging society.

At this page I provide a brief summary of the various research, teaching and board activities that form part of my duties as professor at the University of Amsterdam for 'ANBO' (the largest Dutch organisation for senior citizens) and senior university lecturer at the Utrecht University Utrecht School of Governance (USG).

My background is in linguistics. I graduated cum laude as a French language and literature major, with a minor in Mass Communications and Public Relations. In 1997, I earned my doctorate in international business communications from the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Utrecht. I have worked as a member of the academic staff at this University since 1989.

I am a member of the Research School NIG (Netherlands Institute of Government) and ASCoR (Amsterdam School of Communication Research). I contribute to the USG research programme Managing Social Issues and Sport Matters, and I am active in the focus areas Sport & Society and Game Research.

I have authored several Dutch-language and international publications, including books, book chapters, articles and studies.

As part of my teaching activities at the Utrecht School of Governance, I coordinate the Bachelor Organising Interaction and the Master “Communicatie, Beleid en Management” (Communication, Policy and Management). I teach subjects such as “Veranderen met beleid” (Policies of change), which explores the persuasive effect of textual and visual signs. Moreover, I am a member of the USG teaching board BUS/BAS.

Since June 2009 I also work as professor at the University of Amsterdam (Communication Science).

01.10.2016 to 31.10.2017
General project description

The purpose of this project is to explore how exergames (digital games combining exercise with game play) and the playful interactions fostered during play can contribute to establish, reinforce or change the nature of social interactions among refugees and Dutch children in school classes. Exergame play enables multiple players to compete or cooperate on a team, thereby providing both a virtual and a real social interaction. Because exergame play allows youth to take their eyes off their peers and direct their attention toward a screen, game play may reduce body self-consciousness during physical activity.
